7 Best Wireless Monitors and Adapters (2023)

When it comes to wireless monitors, you have two options:

You can either a) buy a wireless monitor OR you can b) buy an adapter that turns your TV into a wireless monitor.

It’s that simple.

However, you should also be aware of compatibility issues.

For example, some wireless displays and adapters only work with Windows and Android devices, while others are only compatible with Apple.

In any case, I’ve got you covered with a shortlist of the best options available today.

Best Wireless Monitors

1. Samsung M5 Series Smart Monitor

Samsung’s M5 Series is ideal for anyone who needs a second monitor for work purposes but also wants to watch movies on it at night.

On the business side of things, it connects wirelessly to your laptop, so you can benefit from a bigger screen, which is FHD 1080p.

A second monitor is ideal for people who get eye strain or simply want a bigger screen for productivity purposes.

The screen is big enough that it feels like an actual TV but small enough to be a wireless monitor for desktop. It even comes with a remote control, so you can kick back and watch it from across the room.

My Top Pick
Samsung M5 wireless monitor

Samsung M5 Series Smart Monitor

With Samsung’s M5, you get loads of value without paying a fortune. It has all the features you’d expect from a smart monitor, and is the perfect size. This is my choice for the best wireless monitor.

Key Features

  • All-in-one Smart Monitor can be used for work and play
  • Wireless connectivity reduces clutter around desk or office area
  • Streams entertainment apps such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO
  • Built-in speakers and voice-enabled remote control
  • Compatible with Samsung DeX Wireless and Apple Airplay 2

Bottom Line

There are two areas where the M5 shines: value and utility. It’s not a perfect monitor by any means (more on that below), but for the price, you’re getting a true two-in-one device with lots of bells and whistles.

You’ll have to create a Samsung account to get the most out of this monitor, but it’s a small price to pay for all the features you get. It has voice control, wireless DeX, automatic light adjustment, built-in speakers, its own operating system, and access to all of your favorite apps (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu) for content streaming.

Another thing I love about the M5 is its size. I prefer the 27-inch, but it comes in 25-inch and 32-inch models as well. I like that it comes with a remote control, which makes it feel like a real TV when you’re not working.

So, what are the downsides? Well, for one, the build quality is average. Also, the FHD 1080p screen is okay for casual use, but if you’re a professional graphic designer, video editor, or photo retoucher, there are some other, non-wireless options you should consider.

But for pure functionality at an excellent price, the M5 is a winner. It’s the best bluetooth monitor on this list.

2. Samsung M7 Series Smart Monitor

Samsung’s M7 Series is the next step up from the M5. It does everything the M5 does but has a better display (4K UHD), providing superior image quality to its smaller sibling.

Like the M5, the main draw with the M7 is utility. For example, if you live in a dorm room or studio apartment, you can use it as a smart TV and a computer monitor. It’s insanely practical for people in small spaces or on a tight budget.

I would think twice before using it as a serious gaming monitor, though. As a multiuse device, it’s great, but the low refresh rate (60Hz) won’t provide the best experience. For casual gaming, it should be ok.

Like the M5, the smart features on the M7 are incredibly useful. For example, with Bixby voice assistant, you can tell the monitor to open up Netflix or adjust the volume, and it will do so instantly. That’s pretty cool, in my opinion.

Samsung M7 Series Smart Monitor

On paper, the Samsung M7 has a slight edge over the M5 on account of the gorgeous 4K UHD display. It does cost a bit more, but may be worth it if you plan on streaming lots of movies, TV, and YouTube.

Key Features

  • Wirelessly connectivity removes the need for cables
  • It can be used as a computer monitor or TV and movie screen
  • Streams entertainment apps such as Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube
  • 4K UHD screen offers superb image quality
  • Compatible with Samsung DeX Wireless and Apple Airplay 2
  • Has smart monitor capabilities such as voice control

Bottom Line

The Samsung M7 is an excellent work-from-home monitor, especially for people in small spaces. It’s also an ideal choice for minimalists who don’t like a lot of clutter.

To recap, the main reasons to get the M7 over the M5 is the superior image quality (4K FHD) or if you want a massive 43-inch screen, as the M5 tops out at 32 inches wide.

Is the M7 the most high-end monitor you can get? Absolutely not. Does it offer incredible functionality and features at a fairly reasonable price? For sure!

3. Samsung M8 Smart Monitor

If you want to spoil yourself, look no further than the Samsung M8 Smart Monitor.

It has insane functionality, is loaded with bells and whistles, and comes in four different colorways. Best of all, you can cast wirelessly from an Apple or PC device!

If you’re on a laptop, the extra screen real estate comes in handy for work and productivity purposes. After hours, it’s great for watching movies with that nice, wide 16:9 aspect ratio.

Though it has wireless connectivity, you can choose to plug it in via two USB-C inputs and a micro HDMI cable.

Another thing I like about the M8 is the adjustable stand. You can move it up and down to find that perfect height. Little things like that make a big difference when sitting at your computer all day.

Solid Option

Samsung M8 Series Smart Monitor

If brilliant 4K displays with tiny bezels are your thing, look no further than the Samsung M8. It’s a step up from the M5 and M7 in terms of price, but you’ll love watching movies on the gorgeous 32-inch screen.

Key Features

  • Supports wireless connection for Apple and Windows devices
  • Wide enough for dual monitor experience
  • 4K Ultra HD resolution screen has excellent picture quality
  • Has smart TV capabilities with Tizen OS
  • Adjustable stand makes it easy to find the optimum height
  • Voice assistant works with Bixby and Amazon Alexa

Bottom Line

Like the Samsung M5 and M7, the M8 makes sense if you have a tiny apartment, a dorm room, or a home office setup where you need a wireless desktop monitor.

If you place a high value on aesthetics, the M8 is the obvious choice over the M7, which shares a lot of the same functionality.

It looks sleek, has ultrathin bezels, and is only 11.4 mm thick in some areas. This makes it an ideal compact device for small spaces.

The M8’s 4K monitor also has superior image quality. It’s not as pristine as the Apple Retina, but it’s no slouch either with 99 percent sRGB coverage.

Best Wireless Display Adapters

4. Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter

Microsoft’s Wireless Adapter mirrors images, video, or anything else from your mobile device, tablet, or PC onto your TV monitor.

It uses Wi-Fi Direct/Miracast technology, a screen casting standard that allows you to share content wirelessly—no HDMI cable required.

Setting up this adapter is easy. One end plugs into your TV’s HDMI port, while the other plugs into the USB port.

It establishes a direct connection with your device, so if you only have a phone and no Internet connection, you will still be able to stream content on your TV.

The possibilities with this adapter are endless: It can be used to give presentations for work or class, watch movies, present slideshows, and more.

One caveat is that it doesn’t work with Mac OS computers or iOS phones. It’s only compatible with Miracast-enabled Android phones and Windows 10 devices, such as the Surface Laptop Studio.

Best Adapter for Windows
Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter

Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter

This wireless adapter by Microsoft is excellent. It’s inexpensive, portable, and just works. My advice is to doublecheck compatibility with your specific device before purchasing.

Key Features

  • Uses Miracast technology, which is not limited to specific apps
  • The wireless connection has a maximum 23-foot range
  • Compatible with Miracast-enabled Windows 10 devices
  • Inexpensive alternative to buying a second monitor
  • Compact and portable device perfect for small spaces
  • Affordable option for turning your TV into a second monitor

Bottom Line

If you don’t want to spring for a wireless external monitor, casting devices are a good compromise, and Microsoft’s Wireless Adapter is one of the best. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First and foremost, check compatibility. As mentioned above, this adapter is only compatible with certain Android and Windows devices.

Also keep in mind that since it operates using a WiFi signal from your smart phone or computer, the quality will only be as good as the connection on those devices.

The good news is that it’s easy to set up, affordable, and small enough to throw in your bag or pocket, making it essential for work, travel, and much more.

Overall, this wireless display adapter delivers exceptional functionality at a low cost. It is a good Screenbeam Mini2 alternative for home or travel.

5. Apple TV 4K (32 GB)

You already know that Apple TV is used to stream TV shows and movies. What you may not know is that you can mirror content from your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook onto a TV screen as well.

In terms of performance, you’d be hard-pressed to find another casting device that works better, thanks to Apple’s A12 Bionic Chip. Like all Apple products, it’s beautifully designed and incredibly user-friendly.

Since it relies on AirPlay technology, it only works as a mirroring device with other Apple products, such as iOS phones and Mac OS computers.

Best Adapter for Apple
Apple TV

Apple TV 4K (32GB)

You probabaly don’t think of Apple TV as a wireless adapter, but for Mac users, it is a fantastic way to cast content from your laptop or phone onto your TV. Like all Apple products, the performance is top-notch.

Key Features

  • A12 Bionic Chip is a fast and powerful processor
  • Streams 4K HDR video for superior image quality
  • Easy color calibration with iPhone
  • Access to tons of entertainment apps
  • Simple and intuitive user interface
  • Comes with Siri Remote

Bottom Line

The latest generation Apple TV is an amazing piece of technology. There are plenty of less expensive mirroring devices, but this one will give you the best performance with Dolby Atmos sound, 4K HDR video, and a blazing fast processor.

Of course, Apple TV functions as a complete set-top box, offering apps from many different streaming services. It can also play content directly from iTunes.

Last but not least, Apple finally improved the remote control, making it more substantial and user-friendly than previous generations.

6. ScreenBeam Mini2 Wireless Adapter

Do you have a Windows PC or Android device? If so, the ScreenBeam Mini2 can cast content from your computer or phone directly onto your TV screen with ease.

It works similar to Microsoft’s Wireless Adapter in that it’s a plug-and-play device running on Wi-Fi Direct/Miracast technology. Just hook one end into your TV’s HDMI port, the other into a power outlet, and you should be good to go.

Since it has its own wireless connection, the ScreenBeam Mini2 won’t slow down your main wireless network while streaming video. That’s because it piggybacks on the Miracast signal from your smartphone or laptop.

All in all, it’s an wonderful little device, but it only supports Android 4.2+ and Windows 8.1–10 devices with Miracast, so make sure your device is compatible.

Best Alternative
ScreenBeam Mini2 Adapter

ScreenBeam Mini2 Wireless Adapter

The ScreenBeam Mini2 is a pretty good alternative to Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter. However, since it doesn’t have the same level of security, it’s best suited for home use as opposed to travel.

Key Features

  • Wirelessly transforms your TV into a second monitor
  • Compatible with Android 4.2+ and Windows 8.1–10
  • Doesn’t require you to download any apps
  • Low latency makes for a good user experience
  • Dedicated wireless connection
  • Ultra-compact and portable

Bottom Line

ScreenBeam Mini2 does exactly what it says it will do: It mirrors content directly from your Windows, Android, or Miracast-enabled device onto your TV. Just make sure you have a compatible device before purchasing.

While it is very similar to the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, one main difference is that ScreenBeam doesn’t have an accompanying app. This is a blessing and a curse.

On the one hand, it is fast and easy to get started. On the other hand, there’s no option to enter a PIN for security.

This makes Microsoft’s wireless adapter better for public settings, while ScreenBeam Mini2 should only be used at home.

7. Chromecast with Google TV

The Basics

Chromecast with Google TV is one of the most affordable and portable devices on this list. The unique thing about this casting device is that it works with both Windows and Mac devices—a rarity!

This Bluetooth wireless display adapter requires a stable WiFi connection to work effectively. The Internet speed directly effects Chromecast’s ability to achieve the highest possible resolution.

One caveat is that you must download the Google Home app from the Play store. Then make sure both devices are signed in on the same Gmail account and using the same WiFi network.

Once connected, you can cast content from any type of device directly onto your TV screen—whether it’s a movie, presentation, or whatever.

Also Incredible
Chromecast with Google TV

Chromecast with Google TV

Google’s Chromecast is one of the only wireless display adapters that works with both Windows and Mac. If you value user experience and simplicity, this may be the best option for you.

Key Features

  • Most versatile wireless monitor adapter
  • Casts content from any device (Windows or Mac)
  • Compact, portable, and affordable
  • Options for HD or 4K available
  • Excellent overall value
  • Intuitive and easy to use

Bottom Line

Unlike the other items on this list, Chromecast with Google TV doesn’t restrict you to a particular ecosystem of products, which I love.

Therefore, it might be the most user-friendly wireless adapter you can buy.

The 4K option is significantly more expensive than the HD. However, I think it is worth the extra money, as it is still a very affordable Bluetooth display adapter.

What size monitor do I need?

So, you’ve decided to get a second monitor, but now you’re wondering what size to get.

This decision ultimately comes down to two main factors: how much space you have and how much you’re willing to spend.

In this guide, the smallest monitor is 24 inches (Samsung M5). The biggest is 43 inches (Samsung M7).

These measurements are taken diagonally.

With that in mind, I would recommend taking out a tape measure, figuring out exactly how much space you have, and getting the biggest monitor your space will allow.

Here’s why:

Watching TV and movies is ALWAYS better on a bigger screen. From a work perspective, a larger monitor allows more space for multi-page documents or having numerous windows open simultaneously.

Larger monitors have a higher price, so that is something to factor in too.

Do wireless monitors work for gaming?

Wireless monitors are not recommended for anything other than casual gaming. Since they rely on a wireless Internet connection, you will likely experience a frustratingly high lag time.

Serious gamers would be better off getting a monitor that is optimized for gaming consoles with a high refresh rate, high resolution, and a wired connection.

In short, wireless technologies still have a long way to go before providing the ultimate gaming experience.

Do I need a wireless adapter?

You only need a wireless adapter if you want to cast content from a device (phone, computer, etc.) onto a larger screen.

If you already have a TV and don’t want to buy a second computer monitor, an adapter is an excellent alternative.

Adapters are also a decent option for people looking to save money. Even on the higher end, the price range of an adapter is far less than that of a monitor.
